We were incorporating Lego into homeschool lessons many years ago when we realized my oldest has highly tactile. I didn’t realize until he could not do subtraction without literally removing things to subtract. This realization – that kids learn differently from parents and they’re bent certain ways … changed the entire way we homeschooled. My fill-in-the-blank loving heart took a backseat to his hands-on learning need. We didn’t write spelling words – he built them with Scrabble tiles. He didn’t match states & capitals, we labeled Lego & “stuck” them together. We built 2D states rather than label maps. Hands-On Learning wasn’t just a cute way to make learning fun. It was purposeful and intentional.
To help him understand his gifting I told him, “you have little invisible brains on the tips of your fingers. You learn best when you touch things.”
Some ideas were brilliant. Others, not so much. But giving him the chance to touch everything lead to a beautiful sketching talent, guitar & piano playing joyful teen.
If you’re incorporating Lego it’s to make the lesson more understandable, engaging, and then the fun factor. Just adding bricks to everything can lessen the point, focus and over time – drop Lego interest. Plus, it can be a mess to pick up. So be wise when to add Lego to your lessons!
