Use Out of Town Libraries

One useful tip when you are traveling, road schooling, or just on vacation… Use out of town libraries!

Hubs usually heads up to the mountains once a week to go snowboarding. But with our busy schedule and lack of interest in falling down a mountain and ending up in a full body cast … we hardly ever go with him.

But I’ve been missing snow. You’d be surprised how much it doesn’t snow in Denver. I think someone lied to us about winter in the Foothills.

Missing those flakes and winter joy, I googled to discover if there was a library near Breckenridge. It’s a small cute touristy town with great coffee shops. I had no idea where the closest library would be to Main Street. Surprise! Summit County Public Library is just a few blocks off Main Street. With free parking which is rare in Breckenridge!

I decided to pack up our laptops and use an out of town library for the day.

Once we dropped off Hubs at the gondola, we found the perfect spot of comfy chairs and portable tables right in front of huge windows looking at the mountains. I was tickled! Returning emails didn’t seem as important as getting in the view.

Since my middle schooler uses: Teaching Textbooks, Compass Classroom Latin, and Typse – all subscription based curriculum – We had plenty to do to occupy our time before lunch.

TIPS: CHARGERS & HEADPHONES

Be sure to bring your laptop & phone chargers! We had enough outlets to plug in the Denver Broncos football teams’ phones!
Headphones or earbuds are key! I was able to listen to a few Vox messages too while no one was bothered by Latin pronunciations.

I used to be terrified to step foot in a library where I did not have a library card. As if some Ancient Greek harpy would swoop down and claw out my eyes. Thankfully you only need a library card to check out books! Chairs, tables, outlets, restrooms, and the view are all available to the public.

If you’re visiting the library in Breckenridge don’t head ‘down to the cafe’. Even though the signs are posted there is no cafe. It’s one scavenger hunt I’d rather not have wasted 15 minutes on to end with a huge disappointment!

Lastly, Fatty’s Pizzeria is right around the corner. It’s not bad but don’t forget it’s still a bar. Even though it states it’s ‘kid friendly’, the local bar flys have potty mouths.

If you’re in Breckenridge I do recommend walking down to Main Street between Lincoln & Washington to Clint’s. Leave your car at the library and get some exercise. The hot chocolate & chocolate cake are super yummy! They offer gluten free desserts too! Definitely a great way to wrap up a homeschool day.
