Our Thanksgivings are pretty quiet so we do not have the cooking, cleaning, family, holiday stress many of our friends seem to endure. OK the truth is I don’t cook Thanksgiving. I have a wonderful husband who loves the challenge of cooking, so I’m usually out of the kitchen until the very end when I have to clean every single pot in the house.
I still know what it takes to entertain some little hands while you’re busy. Over the years I have created some Thanksgiving Activities that might entertain your children so you can finish those holiday preparations!
Thanksgiving Activities
{a few worksheets were originally posted at EducatingLaytons. Click on any link below and print the worksheet – you’ll want to print them before you need them! Because you don’t want to be the crazy mom who lost her mind trying to print out word Hunts while your cranberry sauce burns to the pot.}
Fall Fun
Fall Tree Art– sketch your own fall tree. This could be an endless forest. Pull out every different colored pencil you own!
Fall Leaf Comparison – compare different leaves. Send the kids out into the yard to find three different leaves. Once back inside they can compare and contrast them using this worksheet.
Fall Leaf Maze– help the leaf to the center of the maze. Super easy maze for little ones. They can easily go around the square until they find the opening.
Thanksgiving Fun
Thanksgiving Short Story Adventure – write a Thanksgiving short story adventure! Print out more pages for a longer story. Just be sure it’s not about mom’s burnt cranberry sauce.
THANKSGIVING WORDS create new words from the word THANKSGIVING. With 12 letters Shirley this one will last a little while. Give an extra slice of pie to the one who comes up with the longest word!
Turkey Fun
Lego Turkey Worksheet– learn more about turkeys with this science worksheet. You might need a book or Wikipedia to help out.
Lego Turkey Maze – help the lego turkey to the center of the maze. Another easy maze for a little ones to work their way into the center of the maze rather than around in circles and frustration.
Turkey Science (have can are) – what do turkeys have, what can they do, and what are they?
Build Thanksgiving Lego Creations
Dump your box of legos and start building, unless your box is a 5 pound box then I totally get it! Build a turkey, Squanto, Mayflower, pilgrim hat, and/or cornucopia.
“T” Thanksgiving Games
Make “T” Thanksgiving bags! Have your child add small items to a small brown paper bag. All items must start with the letter T.
On the Road? No problem! Go on a “T” Scavenger Hunt. Similar to I Spy. Point out everything you find that starts with the letter “T”. Add 1 point for each item and see who has the most points by the end of the trip.
Grab Scrabble tiles and spell out THANKSGIVING. Encourage each person to add a word to the original “Thanksgiving”. See how far you can build. Just don’t repeat a word.
Tom the Turkey
One of my favorite Thanksgiving Activities is Tom the Turkey. My youngest transformed his turkey into Little Red Riding Hood. This is such a fun activity. It reminds me of the blank Lego mini figures. Each child can make a fiction and non-fiction character. Or pick a favorite movie (Harry Potter) and make characters from that movie.
We printed out turkey templates here, and will share our disguised turkeys during Thanksgiving dinner. Winner might get an extra slice of apple pie!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!
