Saint Patrick
If you study history from a secular perspective, it’s no fairytale. Even as a Christian, I cringe over many (many) historical accounts when Christian leadership roles were abused and native cultural beliefs were completely wiped out. We read about this even here in CO how the Ute Indians were forced to cut their hair and wear different clothing – to stop being Native American. I believe you can honor your heritage and still love God.
So when I read about St. Patrick I was happy to read:
Familiar with the Irish language and culture, Patrick chose to incorporate traditional ritual into his lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to eradicate native Irish beliefs. For instance, he used bonfires to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire. He also superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what is now called a Celtic cross, so that veneration of the symbol would seem more natural to the Irish.
