Have you ever taken a cooking class? I am really excited to share our most recent adventure to Publix Aprons Cooking School in Dr. Phillips Orlando Florida.
First let me share that my son LOVES cooking shows. He’s crazy for them. I’ve tried the monthly mail home recipes club … but it never grabbed his interest. And as much as he loves cooking he was cursed with a mama who can’t cook at all. I try. Lord knows I have good intentions, but I wasn’t blessed with the cooking gene.
We been on the waitlist for a Apron’s Kid’s Cooking Class for over 4 months. That’s how far booked out these kid classes were at this particular location in Orlando.
We happened to be grocery shopping one afternoon and saw the Halloween gingerbread decorating class. This was of no interest to us because we wanted a hands-on “real” cooking class – not a decorating class.
I just happened to ask one of the ladies at the desk if they had any other classes open before Christmas. Knowing we’d be put on another waitlist. We were over the moon excited to learn there was space for their Holiday Cookies Class!
Apron’s Cooking School
We arrived 10 minutes early and waited outside for the chef’s to greet us. Once they opened the doors we grabbed an apron and washable markers to write our name and decorate our own aprons. We were official!
We waited a good 10/15 minutes for other guests to arrive but only 4 children showed up. Which was great because that meant way more one-on-one time for us! We walked over to the kitchen and immediately started mixing ingredients for the 1st of 4 recipes.
While the children took turns pouring different ingredients into the mixing bowl the parents started helping prep work for the next recipe. It was a well planned and organized class.
We made sugar cookies, ginger snaps, and peppermint bark.
I’m not sure why we didn’t make the lemon cookies, but somebthing happened with the butter being salted butter. Or something like that. {They still gave us the dough to take home and make later. Which of course I forgot in the back of my refrigerator.}
The two chefs working the class we’re happy to answer all types of questions from kids and adults. We talked about ingredients, cooking classes, and kitchen utensils. They were really kind and never tried to upsell us on anything the entire time.
Of course my son loved decorating his sugar cookies best. They were supposed to be wreaths, but he turned them into green monsters. I just let him have fun because I knew he would be eating the lion’s share of our cookies. So I made my own wreaths.
Once we got home I was asked by numerous friends if the cost was worth the class?!
We paid $70 for two of us to attend. We went home with 4 recipes and 12 cookies. We spent over 2 hours in the kitchen. We had endless access to the chefs for help, guidance, and advice. We had unlimited resources for decorating & ingredients. They offered us water, chocolate milk, and orange juice. We also were given a cute take-home bag and small wooden cutting board.
For us, the price was worth it.
Especially because they provided all the ingredients, walked us through step-by-step baking instructions, had loads of room to spread out, offered tips, supplied everything, and it was an enjoyable two hours of hands on learning quality time fun. I simply cannot provide that in my own kitchen. Not to mention they had the patience of saints!
I am looking forward to more Publix Apron Cooking Classes at least once a month starting in January 2019.
