Tissue Paper Craft: Petal Stem Roots

Since we’ve had the tissue paper out I decided to make an easy hands-on Petal Stem Roots science activity.

petal stem roots craft

Why craft petal stem roots? This is a great early elementary craft to help show off roots. Often times the coloring pages just focus on petal & stem and roots are a small after thought. These dangly scary yarn strings really stick out and grab visual & tactile learner’s attention! But if you prefer the safe sweet worksheet print ours: Petal Stem Roots Worksheet.

Craft, What You’ll Need:

1. Paper Bag or construction paper. I have tons of lunchbags and always grab one for crafts!

2. Tissue Paper – green & flower color.

3. Glue – glue stick is brutal on tissue paper find something else!

4. Yarn – brown is great for roots but I only had gray from a sweater I never crocheted.

5. Glitter – I only recommend glitter glue!

6. Tiny Pom Pom or Button – for center of the flower OR drop more glitter glue.

Petal Stem Roots

Cut tissue paper into shapes – we chose squares. Arrange the stem and petals, glue them down. Glue the yarn inside the bag or behind construction paper.

IMPORTANT: Add glitter to the ground first – then up the stem and finally out the petals. This really helps show how plants get & use water! So often children water the petal or the stems in the garden. They can’t see the roots and I’m usually not willing to rip up a healthy plant to show off roots.

If you use a paper bag you can open it up and stick your hand inside to show how the stem can move water up to the petals.

This tissue paper craft took very little time and made a great hands-on learning garden lesson!
