DIY Roman Standard

I’ve had a few people ask me how I made the Roman Standard while studying Story of the World. I’ll share what I bought and how I assembled it. I didn’t take any photos as we put it together because really I was just trying to survive this craft. I felt really nervous it wasn’t going to turn out this good. We were just in the moment of crafting – not thinking about blogging. So I’ll try to explain this as best I can with zero step-by-step photos.

JoAnn’s Purchases:
long Styrofoam “pole” x2 – these were by the floral area.
purple and blue ribbon (on sale 2 for 1)

Around the House:
paper plates
tin foil
hot glue
roman eagle ~ from Story of the World Activity Book
gray spray paint
long paper towel tube

Roman Standard

Step One – spray paint the Styrofoam pieces and paper towel tube gray.
Step Two – wrap paper plates with tin foil. You can just paint these gray as well, but we wanted the “metal coin” look.
Step Three – print eagle and color design on plates. We used a sharpie on the tin foil.
Step Four – hot glue everything! Glue the 2 poles together to make 1 long pole. Glue the plates to the pole. Glue the eagle to the paper towel tube and then glue the tube to the pole. Glue ribbons inside the paper towel tubes.

Be sure to read about the Signifier (Roman soldiers who carried the standard) and the loyalty these men had to their legion. It was a great disgrace if the standard fell. We did a short study from DK Eyewitness Ancient Rome.
