Whoever thought we’d start week 2 with snow flurries in late June?!
We enjoyed ONE day off from hiking and biking because of the snow / rain & freezing temps. We were not packed for that kind of cold.
Thankfully, the days quickly warmed up and by the end of the week we were actually complaining it was hot. Forget it had gotten up to 106* in Orlando and numerous friends had texted to let me know!
Garden of the Gods
We decided to get out of Frisco for the day and head “down” to Colorado Springs. We pulled off into Garden of the Gods and enjoyed some time among the desert landscape. Orange is not my favorite color but this place was beautiful
Rather than park in the main lot and hike we drove to the backside of the red stones and snagged a parking spot at the Palmer trailhead. The boys loved climbing the boulders. Even the dog made it with a little help up the stairs to the lookout.
11th Grade Homeschool
Since we have some downtime after dinner I signed my oldest up for an online summer class, Critical Thinking & Logic through Florida Virtual School. This is a free online program to Florida residents.
This class is a semester elective credit. I also packed books for English 3 for him to start reading. To my surprise he finished The Great Gatsby without much complaint. He watched the most recent movie after finishing the book since he was a bit confused.
So I guess that means 11th Grade Homeschool has started! I can’t believe he’s back home, but trust it’s for the best.
6th Grade Homeschool
We just received my youngest’s Iowa Basic Standardized Test results. I knew he’d do extremely well in Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, etc. scoring almost 2 grades higher. Math was just one grade higher – which is surprising for Teaching Textbooks because everyone believes it’s ‘so much’ slower.
However he scored a grade lower in Grammar. I totally blame Daily Grams. I should have learned my lesson with my first homeschooler.
Both my boys have preformed horribly on tests after using this curriculum. It’s nice ‘daily’ busy work, but my boys have bombed Grammar tests because they do not retain grammatical rules.
Even with the low Grammar section, Henry still scored above average overall. He is very excited and ready to start middle school. Of course, I didn’t bring his curricula on the trip. So we might revisit capitalization and commas after dinner.
Frisco is such a bike friendly place. One path is 55 miles connecting many towns! But I’m loving the Temple Path – which is very similar to Orlando’s West Orange Trail. Only it’s better because of the mountains surrounding it!! We’ve found a cute little playground two blocks from the house. When it gets dark we bike home and get to see the neighborhood fox.
