We have taken a Charlotte Mason approach to our homeschool as far as nature walks, nature journals, and learning through experiences rather than books. Our Animal Encounters posts will share these fun zoology lessons and experiences.
One of our favorite trips was camping out west in Yellowstone National Park. As soon as you pull into the park there is this wide open expanse of land and tons of bison just roaming around. Driving through the park they come all the way up to the side of the road !!
These animals were amazing to watch. Not that I’m a big fan of visiting farms and watching cows chew cud. But there was something so interesting about these bison. How different they look. A bit menacing if you look them in the eye. Don’t kid yourself we didn’t get too close and someone always had an eye on them. But it was just such a neat experience when my boys are so used to Florida animals like snakes, gators, and squirrels.
We learned a lot about the western bovine, with a Bison Worksheet.
Difference between Bison and Buffalo
Interesting Facts! Bison are found in North America while Buffalo are found in Africa and Asia. Bison have the shaggy coat and shorter horns. Buffalo have a thinner sleeker coat and much longer horns. Bison were hunted close to extinction while buffalo were domesticated and used as farm help.
So football fans … Buffalo Bills, claim their mascot is the “American Buffalo” which isn’t a buffalo. Really, there are no “American Buffalo”. It’s a shaggy bison. Homeschool smarts strike again!!
I created this Compare & Contrast Bison vs Buffalo worksheet. I might like Venn Diagrams a bit and wanted to introduce them to my early learners.
